Le Cathcart Restaurants et Biergarten: Restaurants and Collaborators Now Revealed

As part of the $200M Esplanade Place Ville Marie revitalization project from owner Ivanhoé Cambridge, Place Ville Marie is set for the January 2020 opening of Le Cathcart Restaurants et Biergarten, an impressive 35,000 ft2 (3,252 m2) food hall showcasing new concepts from established chefs – including the renowned Antonio Park – as well as newcomers on the city’s culinary scene. A5 Hospitality has also tapped former Toqué! and Bistro Mansfield executive chef LIONEL PIRAUX to be the Cathcart’s culinary director.

The new downtown epicurean space will soon provide Montrealers with a unique and varied culinary offering, including 3 full-service restaurants, 9 food counters, two cafés and a biergarten located under PVM’s 650 m2 (7,000 ft2) glass pavilion – an amazing architectural feat created by Sid Lee Architecture in collaboration with Menkès Shooner Dagenais LeTourneux Architectes. Designed as a public space bathed in light and vegetation, this indoor garden, soon to become a lively meeting place adapted to the ebb and flow of daily life, will offer a festive social experience where people can enjoy good food and drink.

“When we were invited to rethink and redesign the Place Ville Marie food hall, the grand architectural gestures had already been set in motion with the idea of giving back a living space to the workers and residents of the downtown core. With this top of mind, the goal was to create a warm and friendly gathering space with an array of elevated restaurant choices, and everyday affordability, where people would be inspired to return and come together again and again. This led to selecting collaborators who knew how to offer products and concepts that know how to please everyone, explains Alexandre Besnard, founding member of A5 Hospitality group and creator of Le Cathcart Restaurants et Biergarten.”

Below is a list of the different concepts that visitors will get to enjoy at Le Cathcart Restaurants et Biergarten, as well as the chefs and collaborators who will contribute to making it an exceptional Montreal venue.



Located underneath the glass pavilion, the BIERGARTEN will offer a vast selection of microbrewery beers, carefully curated by the beer expert Stéphane Pilon (founder of Vilains Brasseurs, Broken 7), a wine selection prepared by sommelier Marc-André Nadeau (Jatoba), and a choice of sophisticated cocktails created by Daphnée Vary Deshaies (ex-Foxy). Designed for groups of all sizes, the BIERGARTEN will be an ideal venue for happy hours and other types of gatherings, as the space can be reconfigured for any occasion (i.e. parties, weddings, conferences, etc.). With a monthly entertainment calendar to be announced shortly, the BIERGARTEN is sure to become a must-see hot spot.

Le Cathcart Restaurants et Biergarten will also include 3 full-service restaurants:


Japanese cantina AKIO will serve meals inspired by Osaka street food, including a selection of sushi and charcoal-grilled brochettes. The concept is a collaboration between chefs ANTONIO PARK (Park, Lavanderia, Flyjin, Kampai) and OLIVIER VIGNEAULT (Jatoba, Westwood Bar & Grill, ex-Yuzu).


PIZZA DEL FORNAIO (which translates as “baker’s pizza”) will serve delectable Neopolitan-inspired pizzas from Italian chef FEDERICO BIANCHI (formerly of Bottega Pizzeria).


The new brasserie MIRABEL will serve simple, elegant, accessible fare morning, noon and night, with chef NICHOLAS GIAMBATTISTO (formerly of Caffe Un Po’ Di Piu and Joe Beef) creating a menu inspired by French and Italian cuisines.

The offering will also include 9 street-food counters:


The DIRTY GREENS counter will offer delicious, hearty salads and other mouth-watering, healthy options. Chef RAEGAN STEINBERG (Arthur Nosh Bar, ex-Joe Beef) is behind this concept.


Patzzi takes gourmet Italian sandwiches to new heights, with a generous array of garnishes and an unexpected blend of flavours concocted by chefs ALEXANDRE COHEN and LUKA LECAVALIER (Arthur Nosh Bar).


Chef MICHAEL LEWIS brings the Miami vibe to Montreal with his new Korean fried chicken counter CHIKIN. Chef Lewis’ Miami restaurant KYU is a James Beard Award-winner for Best New Restaurant, and it also made Bon Appétit magazine’s list of top 10 Miami health-food restaurants.


Owned by A5 Hospitality, these banners are currently available at Comptoir Général in Place Ville Marie. Patrons will now get to sample their menus at Le Cathcart.

Named Canada’s Best Burger by the website Big 7 Travel, UNIBURGER is chef YOUNES BENGELOUNE’s take on the typical California burger, focusing on fresh, top-quality produce. This new counter comes on the heels of his two existing locations.


OMNIVORE is known for its revamped Lebanese classics, including grilled meats, fresh salads and original sandwiches. Chefs CHARBEL YAZBECK and AKRAM SLEIMAN first introduced Omnivore in 2010, and Le Cathcart counter will be their third location in the franchise.


MON NAN is a Montreal institution helmed by JOE LEE. The menu will include classic Chinese dishes, including the chef’s famous dumplings and glazed duck.


Restaurant  is now a Montreal must, and this latest location will include its signature blend of Mr. Hà’s Vietnamese cuisine and chef ROSS LOUANGSIGNOTHA’s Lao touch. The Cathcart counter will be the chain’s third establishment, joining the Mont-Royal Ave. and McGill St. restaurants.


The Cathcart will also feature two CAFÉS, developed in partnership with chef and culinary stylist BLAKE MACKAY (Di Stasio, Bouffe Style Blake).


As a stimulating space for business lunches, relaxing after-work, happy hours, and animated weekend dinners, Le Cathcart Restaurants et Biergarten stands out with its wide-ranging offering and authentic Montreal atmosphere. More than a culinary experience, Le Cathcart Restaurants et Biergarten is a lively living space with a rich variety of atmospheres, housed in a sprawling 3,252 m2 (35,000 ft2) space that includes a large, natural-light-infused garden thanks to PVM’s 650 m2 (7,000 ft2) glass pavilion, which opens Galerie PVM and Le Cathcart onto the heart of downtown Montreal. Le Cathcart is a new concept created by A5 Hospitality (a Montreal-based restaurant & bar designer and operator) and executed by Sid Lee Architecture (responsible for the major Place Ville Marie public space revitalization project), in consortium with Menkès Shooner Dagenais LeTourneux Architectes. Jegantic Hospitality Group to launch an Old Montreal homage to 90s-era Brooklyn, with a Thaiwaiian twist

Hospitality and entertainment group, Jegantic, the creative geniuses behind many Montreal hotspots, most recently, Bord’elle, is proud to announce the upcoming launch of their latest venture: The Farsides (690 rue Notre-Dame West, Old Montreal). Coined as a “Thaiwaiian” restaurant and tiki bar, The Farsides, located in the heart of Old Montreal’s Financial District, blends together 90s nostalgia with eastern Thai flavors and the shores of Hawaii. The result? A first-of-its-kind dining experience to make waves in Montreal.

With this venue, Jegantic is bringing a unique twist to Old Montreal dining with their distinctive cuisine, urban concept, and re-imagining of the classic tiki cocktail. Stepping into The Farsides will be like walking into a contemporary take of a Brooklyn alleyway, circa 1992. Complete with brick walls as high as the eye can see, fire escapes, graffiti-laced facades paying homage to 90’s urban pop culture and, believe it or not, their very own basketball court. Add a touch of the exotic with jungle type overgrowth set to the beat of 90’s hip-hop, and your journey is complete.

The delicious, innovative Thai-Hawaiian menu is the brainchild of award-winning Executive Chef Athiraj Phrasavath.

Everything on the menu is a feast for the senses, marrying familiar flavors with elevated function. From dishes such as “Drunken Lobster Pad Thai” with Whole Canadian Lobster, Remy Martin 1738 Accord Royal, all-natural Thai rice noodles, Farsides yellow curry, pan fried shallots, and roasted garlic, to their “Big Poppa Pineapple Boat”; Thaiwaiian North Shore Shrimp in a jumbo pineapple boat, doused in The Farsides signature Thai sweet fire sauce, served on a bed of big island mac & potato salad with Jasmine scented rice; the restaurant provides an unparalleled dining experience for guests who want to relive the 90s for a night, indulge in some amazing food, or simply discover a new place for a fun evening out.

With their kitchen closing at midnight, clients will be able to come and enjoy some late night eats! The Farsides also offers a signature vegan menu, created by US Master Chef Winner Dino Luciano, featuring dishes such as “Poblano Green Curry”; masterfully seasoned herb crusted cauliflowers skewers and so much more.

The decadent food is perfectly complemented with an incredible program of tiki cocktails, expertly created by famed mixologist Lawrence Picard. Featuring a variety of classic tiki cocktails with a modern twist, patrons will be able to explore new tastes and pairings. All of the cocktails are infused with the team’s passion for hip hop, which is reflected in the drinks’ unique names. The creator and owner of The Farsides and Jegantic is none other than John Edward Gumbley, who is also the brainchild behind of 1920s Prohibition-inspired venue Bord’Elle. A true trailblazer, for the past twenty years, John has been a leading figure in Montreal’s nightlife, music, entertainment and hospitality industries. La Champagnerie changes its name to Maison St. Paul

On the occasion of its 6th anniversary, La Champagnerie du Vieux-Montreal is getting a makeover and changing its name. The new spring menu of chef Jacques Coutu will also be unveiled for the occasion.

A refreshed decor

Michel Prete, the designer behind La Voûte, has been contracted to update La Champagnerie’s old interior design to reflect Maison St. Paul’s new image. Cooler colors will replace the shades of black and gold to create a brighter atmosphere. A new section of approximately 10 places will also be added near the entrance to accommodate larger groups.

A gastronomy of high caliber

In addition to its outstanding bubble menu, Maison St. Paul continues to appeal to its high caliber cuisine that makes it one of the best places to dine, saber bottles of bubbly, and party until late at night as it turns into a nightclub on Friday and Saturday nights.

The cuisine of talented chef Jacques Coutu focuses on the freshness and quality of the ingredients. The chef prioritizes local producers, including the Montreal Island farm for its magnificent baskets of fresh vegetables. The new, updated spring menu features dishes such as grilled octopus, shrimp ceviche and extravagant seafood platters. Carnivores will find something to do with the duck plate of the ancestral and artisanal farm “Canard du Village”, not to mention the undisputed king of poutines served with foie gras, lobster and filet mignon.

Happy 6th birthday!

On June 5, Maison St. Paul will begin several days of festivities to celebrate its anniversary and to thank its customers for the last six years. They will also unveil the new decor and their new identity. The evenings will be full of colors and flavors with a superb raw bar offered on the house on Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 June.

Customers will be able to celebrate with the help of the bottle service, the anniversary which will also mark the kick-off of the Grand Prix for a week of madness. Maison St. Paul promises parties mixed by the best DJs in town including DJ Yo-C & DJ Zo on June 5th, followed by Chris Laroque (Toronto) on Friday June 7th, Toni Vegas (Paris) and Zack Cola on Saturday June 8th and Remy Kersten (Hong Kong) & Carmine Sorrentino (Monaco) will close off the week-end for the brunch on Grand Prix Sunday.

Signature evenings

Maison St. Paul continues the tradition of MERCREDIS SABRÉS, a very popular evening since its inception. A selection of private import bubbles carefully selected by the house is offered at 50% of the price.

On Thursdays, JEUDIS RAW BAR are an opportunity to discover incredible raw specialties such as Hawaiian salmon poké and ceviches of all kinds. Seafood is also showcased: king crab, sea urchins, princess scallops, and much loved whelks.

Every summer evening (Tuesday to Sunday), the beautiful terrace on Saint-Paul Street in front of the Bonsecours market welcomes you to spend a delicious moment with friends.

La Porte Rouge destroyed by arson

The Montreal police arson squad is investigating a fire that broke out at La Porte Rouge bar in Montreal’s Plateau-Mont-Royal at around 5am on Thursday May 9th, 2019.

Montreal Police Constable Raphaël Bergeron said that witnesses saw someone using an accelerant in the bar right before setting the fire and fleeing on foot.

Luckily, there were no injuries but no arrests have been made so far.

The building, located on Mont-Royal Avenue east of Papineau Avenue, suffered considerable damage. It took firefighters over an hour to knock down the flames.

The bar will obviously be closed while the cleanup and possible rebuild process take place.

Word on the street was that it was early impossible to get into this exclusive event. Due to his high profile, security was buckled down and only A-listers were invited.
