While Montreal is an urban scape filled with daytime festivals and park relaxation, don’t forget about its bustling nightlife. The MTL after hours venues are unique and unrivalled by all other North American cities, and one of the best of all is that supreme late-night club you’ll find a crowd outside of each weekend on Sainte-Catherine. (((Stereo))) Nightclub is a temple for anyone who wants to go wild, and the DJ sets it presents are simply out of this world.
This September, (((Stereo)))’s organizers have made sure to bring us a roster of musical acts so red-hot that we forget the warm weather is waning and September creeps in this petty pace from day to day. But since (((Stereo))) has put together such a strong lineup, we’re here to give you the highlights of the month to help you decide which premier techno producers and nightclub maestros to purchase tickets for ASAP.
Sun, Sep 2: HERNAN CATTANEO (All Night Long)
Hernan Cattaneo’s career in the underground music industry has spanned over three long decades. He took off in the mid-80s in the heart of house music’s genesis, influenced by the sounds of pioneers such as New Order, Frankie Knuckles and Depeche Mode. A current master of worldwide DJ residencies, Cattaneo’s first spot was at Buenos Aires’ monumental Clubland.
He went on to become the original South American resident at Cream Liverpool and Ibiza, and ever since has put on legendary shows at Bedrock, Pacha and Nevada’s infamous arts festival Burning Man. In the decades that followed, Cattaneo built a solid reputation based on earning sky-high spots in DJMag’s top 100 years in a row, intensive touring schedules that cover the planet’s most distinguished music fests, and a Resident radio show with a neverending amount of listeners.
Mon, Sep 3: NICOLE MOUDABER b2b VICTOR CALDERONE
Born in Nigeria and one of the founders of dance music in Beirut, Moudaber’s all-inclusive early dance parties caught the attention of both media and the police. Her post-war ‘Trashy Renaissance’ party drew talent from all over the globe, took place in the vicinity of a mosque and cathedral, and was meant to defy the notion of hatred and prove the new generation could succeed through music. “It was a success,” she says, but the self-expression the DJ inspired also led to accusations of terrorism from local authorities. “It was enough to persuade me that I was wasting my time out there […] so I very much stuck to London and Europe from there onwards.”
Born in Brooklyn and introduced to Big Apple nightlife by his older brother, Calderone was only 15 when he started to experiment with turntables. A decade later he released a collaborative techno album, but unsure of his future, removed himself from the music industry to make ends meet in the restaurant business. In 2001 he relapsed to the club life with a #1 spot on the charts, residencies at the Roxy in New York and Liquid in Miami Beach, and a plethora of dissonant Madonna remixes.
Sat, Sep 15: DETROIT LOVE MTL: CARL CRAIG a2a Stacey Pullen / Ostrich
Carl Craig is described as a creative visionary, an electronic music, an esteemed Grammy-nominated composer, a world-class DJ and an ambassador for his native Detroit. Yet the common thread that runs through Craig’s broad musical canon and creative projects is a resounding fascination with futurism. The prolific producer has cultivated a unique path as an artist, entrepreneur and civic leader, guided by his tendency toward forward thinking.
Sun, Sep 30: Chus & Ceballos (All Night Long)
Heard of CHUS & CHEBALLOS? They’re undoubtedly Spain’s strongest pair of producers. Chus L. Esteban and J. Pablo Ceballos are the founding fathers of Stereo Productions: one of the most influential Spanish EDM labels of this decade, and the creators of the ‘Iberican Sound’ movement. They both hail from the same small Madrid village, but have worked their way up to master status, which has secured the DJs formidable residences at nightclubs across the globe — from Ibiza to Burning Man, Tokyo to LA, and even Montreal’s (((STEREO))). Their eclectic sound ranges from tribal drums to official remixes of Madonna, J.Lo and Shakira, and this weekend, this red-hot variety of tracks will be unleashed upon MTL.
That’s only scratching the surface of the artists who will be bringing smooth and eclectic synth melodies to you all September at (((Stereo))). Known for possessing one of the world’s most immersive sound systems, the after-hours venue’s speakers promise to bring you to another level with these veterans and rising DJs at the helm.
